Bring Back the Coupons!

Every Sunday, faithful coupon users open up their local Sunday newspaper and look for one thing, the coupon inserts. That has all changed now the one of the coupon insert distributors has decided to pull their inserts from local newspapers. RedPlum, also known as Valassis has switched from providing their coupon inserts in the newspaper to mailing them directly to consumers.

For the average person, this may not seem like a big deal, but this is a big deal. This website represents a large community of people who enjoy shopping with coupons. You can call us bargain hunters, cheapstakes, or frugal spenders, but make no mistake: we love our coupons because they allow us to save money and help those who are in need. Each week, we buy multiple Sunday newspapers so we can get more than just one set of coupons.

Why do WE do this? We do this so we are able to use these multiple coupons when we shop. We then do a variety of things with the money we save by using coupons.

– We donate goods we purchased with coupons to our local pantries and homeless shelters.

– We give food, health and beauty supplies, and paper goods to our neighbors and relatives in need.

– We often send care packages to our kids in college.

– We also use coupons to keep our own pantries stocked with the products used frequently in our houses.

We are able to do this by purchasing extra newspapers at newsstands primarily for the coupons, and then we match up store sales with the coupons we find.

As of February 1st 2009, RedPlum coupon inserts have been discontinued in many newspapers throughout major US cities. The Valassis Corporation, which distributes the RedPlum, does not realize how this will affect consumers like us and our ability to donate to the needy.

Valassis has responded by saying that consumers can “now print coupons from their website,” but the problem is that many stores refuse to accept internet printed coupons.

Instead of these coupon inserts for how things are made, for example, appearing in the Sunday paper, Valassis will begin mailing the RedPlum coupon inserts to home addresses. This seems like it will end up costing the company more money in the long run with little return as many people discard mailed advertisements.

Thomas Murray of the Valassis Corporation, which owns RedPlum, issued a press release stating:

“Starting in February, the RedPlum coupon booklet will now be delivered in Cleveland through consumers’ mailboxes along with their weekly grocery circulars and other savings and deals. By using direct mail, the RedPlum insert will now be able to reach almost twice as many Cleveland households as in the past. In these challenging economic times, it has never been more important to make these essential savings available to as many Clevelanders as possible so they can stretch the dollars in their wallets.”Thomas Murray, Vice President and General Manager of Free Standing Inserts¬†for the Valassis Corporation

Valassis has pulled their RedPlum coupon inserts from major cities in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Utah, Virginia, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Maryland, and Texas. The purpose of this website is to provide a platform for consumers everywhere to make a public statement to the Valassis Corporation regarding their decision to remove their coupon inserts from Sunday Newspapers.
